THE ISSUES....
Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) including poultry, cattle and swine have come under scrutiny for their potential to adversely impact the
environment. Special permits, licensing and waste management plans are now required before an operation can commence business. In some parts of the country the issues have pitted neighbor against neighbor and the argument has been taken to the ballot box.
The problems stem from the ineffective management of waste from these operations and the resulting odors. The waste has
beneficial uses as plant nutrients and is often land applied. But problems are created for lakes, streams and groundwater, when excess nutrients are introduced in the environment.
THE PROBLEM . . . AND THE SOLUTION
The real problem is one of intensity .
We, as consumers, demand an abundance of cheap food. American agriculture has met this demand by placing ever greater numbers of animals on smaller pieces of real estate. We have created factory farms. Nutrient overload is now the norm, not the exception.
The solution to these problems is not new or revolutionary. Nature has been successfully degrading animal waste as part of the food chain and biological processes since the beginning of time.
The solution is to boost the natural degradation processes by using specially selected synergistic suites of microbes and enzymes. In doing so the natural process can keep pace with the abundance of nutrients. The intense odors are produced when the natural processes can't keep pace with the waste load.
We must help Nature cope with the by-product of abundance.
Alken Clear-FloŽ Products are uniquely suited to the task.
FIELD RESULTS....
Phoenix Processes has developed a 'Best Management Practice' using Alken Clear-FloŽ products that has been field proven to eliminate swine odor.
This BMP can also be adjusted to a less costly, odor management protocol.
In a confined swine operation with more than 600 sows the formation of any odor was prevented using less than 1 pound of Clear-FloŽ 7000 per 150 animals on a 10-day innoculation schedule. Waste sumps beneath the animals were emptied after 20 days because they were full of waste - not because of odor.
By virtue of being degraded or processed the quality of nutrients
is improved. Nutrients are in a form that is more readily available to plants. This means that the potential for adverse environmental impact is reduced or eliminated. Odors can be prevented or reduced to a manageable level.
Another Alken product, Enz-OdorŽ has found favor with workers at a swine breeding operation. They have declared that Enz-OdorŽ is the only product available that will effectively remove 'boar scent' from clothing and hands.
