Permit Violation and Disposal Costs Place Hair-Care Products Manufacturer's Future in Jeopardy

A mid-western manufacturer specializing in hair care products including shampoo, pomade, dressings, conditioners, lotions and gels had exceeded their discharge permit level for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) by a factor of 40-times. In response to enforcement action the plant had begun to collect their waste in 55-gallon drums. The plant was facing possible fines and annualized disposal costs of more than $750,000.00 !

The Solution
PHOENIX designed a simple bio-reactor treatment system using 2 used 4000-gallon tanks and a new portable mixer. The small tank battery treatment system was placed on an existing concrete pad outside the building. (Typical annual temperature range at this latitude is about 20 to 100ē F). Waste is treated in one tank while being collected in the other.

ALKEN-MURRAY microbiologists developed a treatment protocol that was successfully implemented in the field. ALKEN CLEAR-FLOŽ products were added to the treatment tank and a straightforward operating procedure was developed that fit into the client's daily routine operations.

The Results
With an 11-day treatment cycle TPH is brought from >4000 ppm to less than 50- ppm. This means the waste stream can go directly to sanitary sewer.

Based on projected disposal costs the equipment costs were recovered in 5-operating days. Annual material costs for Alken Clear Flo products were recovered in 1-operating day. No additional personnel were added to the payroll.
