Bacteria play an important role in the normal biological cycle by converting organic
compounds into new cell mass, carbon dioxide and water. These single-celled mircoorganisms
are classified as plants and constitute the vary basis of waste water control with the
help of other microflora (eg algae) and microfauna (eg protozoa and rotifers). The Alken
Clear-Flo® strains of microorganisms are adapted from naturally occurring strains that
exhibit some measure of the desired activity such as the degradation of ammonia, for
example. Special techniques increase this activity. These are NOT bio-engineered bacteria.
These specialized abilities may never be expressed unless the targeted compunds are
present. If these organisms are released into the environment they will have no selective
advantage unless the targeted pollutants are present. In the natural environment or once
targeted pollutants are degraded these organisms will generally be overwhelmed by
naturally-occurring organisms.
Bioremediation or the degradation of organic compounds through the use of microorganisms
and other natural substances (eg enzymes) is a technology that is as old as time itself
and as new as tomorrow.
